In legal terminology, service means informing the addressee of court decisions, the judicial process, and the events that occur in a lawsuit. Although service is subject to specific legal formalities that must be observed, its main purpose is to inform the addressee; therefore, these methods and formalities are procedural rather than substantive in nature. Nevertheless, the verification of service and the manner in which it is carried out can be of great importance with respect to the rights of the recipient. In other words, if it is established that service has been effected personally, a claim of lack of knowledge of its contents is generally not accepted, and this may give rise to responsibility for the recipient. However, if service has been effected constructively, lack of knowledge may be proven and the recipient may benefit from the legal consequences thereof. The method of verifying service in the old, physical form differs from its new, electronic form, and these differences also entail distinct legal effects. In the present study, after defining service, the related characteristics and principles are discussed, the types of service are explained, and the manner of verifying service is also described. Finally, by setting out the rules of service in each of the aforementioned cases, criticisms and suggestions are presented regarding the verification of service with a view to achieving fair trial.
